At its opening in 1961, Whitaker Park was considered one of the most advanced manufacturing operations in the world. Situated on 220 acres, this vast complex of open areas and multi-purpose structures was being vacated by its owner and Walter Robbs was tasked with helping determine viable options for the property.
The concept of “access”was a central theme in our approach and one which effectively transformed a property that had previously allowed only employees to be on it. Our designs introduced ideas that connected both people and communities: we incorporated pedestrian and bicycle greenways; envisioned a new vehicular entrance procession from the nearby expressway; identified the best areas for light industrial or mixed-use development, and; visualized how one quadrant could connect a nearby university’s academic and athletic facilities.
